Riverdale Questions & Answers

  • WHAT IS THE PEARL?

The Pearl is a fitness studio with three locations in The Bronx: on City Island, in Mott Haven, and coming soon to Riverdale! We’re the first and only studios in the Bronx with group Pilates Reformer classes. We offer a diverse range of Pilayes, yoga, and dance classes focused on enhancing mental + physical well-being. Our community-driven and inclusive environment fosters a safe and fun space for all.

  • WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAT AND REFORMER PILATES?

Mat Pilates is done on the floor with just a mat, using your own body weight for resistance. Reformer Pilates uses a specialized machine with springs, pulleys, and a moving carriage to add resistance and support. Both focus on core strength, alignment, and controlled movement - the mat emphasizes stability with minimal equipment, while the reformer offers variety and a new challenge.

  • I’VE NEVER BEEN ON A REFORMER BEFORE…

Start with a Pilates Fundamentals class (or two, or three!) before joining one of our open level classes, and let us know before we start that you’re a newbie! Our experienced instructors will guide you through proper use of the Pilates equipment. We know you’ll fall in love with the Reformer.

  • WHEN WILL YOU OPEN?

Soon - we can't wait! We're currently aiming for a mid-autumn opening and are so excited to bring The Pearl to Riverdale. Opening a new studio always comes with a lot of moving pieces, so our timeline may shift slightly, but sign up above & we’ll keep you posted every step of the way. Founding Members will be invited to a preview before we officially open our doors.

  • HOW DOES THE CREDIT SYSTEM WORK?

The Pearl uses a credit system for class bookings, ensuring seamless payment for various class types. Think of credits as your movement currency. With different packages available, including recurring monthly memberships and credit packs, you can choose the option that best suits your needs. As a monthly member, you receive a set amount of credits to use on any classes you like. If you’re not able to use al of your credits, up to 16 (the value of two mat classes or one equipment class) will roll over into the next month.

  • SHOULD I BECOME A MEMBER?

Yes! Members enjoy exclusive benefits, including deeply discounted rates, guest passes, occasional swag, and a 10% discount on in-studio items. Members receive a set number of credits per month, and have that month to use them at any of our locations. Up to 16 unused credits roll over to the next month. Having credits that you have to use is a motivator to schedule your classes, get into the studio, & start moving - because it’s easier to follow through when you have a plan!

  • WHAT IS A FOUNDING MEMBERSHIP?

Our Founding Membership is a special offer available only before we open. It's our way of thanking the people who believe in The Pearl from the very beginning by giving them our best rate, exclusive perks, and locked pricing. Sign up above and you’ll be the first to know when Founding Memberships become available.

  • WHAT WILL THE CLASS SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?

While our schedule won't be finalized until we open, you can view our City Island or Mott Haven schedules to get an idea of what we're planning. Our goal is to offer classes throughout the day - from early mornings before work to evenings and weekends - with a mix of Pilates Reformer, yoga, mat Pilates, and specialty classes.

As we get closer to opening, we'll continue to refine the schedule based on community interest and feedback.

  • HOW DO I BOOK CLASSES?

Booking classes is easy and can be done online through our website or on the Walla app. Simply create your profile, log in, choose your preferred class, and book your spot. Classes are available to book up to two weeks in advance. Workshops can be booked up to a month in advance. Our aim is to make the booking process simple and convenient. If you ever need help, just send us a message on Walla, and email, or give us a call, and someone can help walk you through the booking process.

  • WHAT SHOULD I BRING/WEAR TO CLASS?

Just bring your water bottle, and grippy socks for Reformer classes. No worries if you don’t have grip socks, we sell them at the studio. For mat classes, we provide mats and all props, but you’re welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer. Don’t forget to bring your good vibes 😎

Wear whatever you feel comfortable moving in! We recommend comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely. If you're taking a Pilates Reformer class, avoid overly loose or flowy clothing, as it can get caught in the equipment.

  • DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE SESSIONS?

Yes! In addition to our group classes, we offer one-on-one private Pilates sessions. Whether you're brand new to Pilates, recovering from an injury, working toward a specific goal, or simply prefer a more personalized experience, our instructors can create a program tailored just for you.

Private sessions will be available after we open. Join our email list to be the first to hear when booking becomes available.

  • I HAVE A PHYSICAL LIMITATION...

We want every client to feel safe and supported in their movement practice. If you’re pregnant, recovering from surgery, or working with a chronic condition or injury, the best first step is to talk with us. Let the front desk or your instructor know what’s going on so we can support you.

Sometimes, the safest option is to begin with a few private sessions. This gives you one-on-one attention, helps you learn modifications that work for your body, and sets you up for success when you’re ready for group classes.

That said, group classes aren’t always the right fit for every stage of recovery or every condition. Our teachers will help guide you and may recommend waiting or sticking with privates for a while. Your safety and long-term well-being will always come first.
